Newcastle Peoples Chorus
The People’s Chorus is a union choir with an emphasis on social justice and workers’ rights. Its members combine these concerns with a love of singing.
New members are always welcome.
The Chorus is now 30 years old and has grown from a small group to a choir with considerable confidence. The third recording, a CD called “They Spoke Eureka’s Name”, was released in 2010. In the past the Chorus has toured the UK and New Zealand.
Since 1998 Ecopella has been making choral music for the environment. You might imagine us to be a somewhat gloomy ensemble, but our sense of fun fills each performance with positive and satirical messages. Even when the mood becomes serious, the beauty and solemnity of our music is uplifting.
We’ve also created something else quite lovely: a social network of thoughtful people concerned by the crisis facing our world and sharing their voices harmoniously. We are spread out over seven branches, including one that meets fortnightly on Sundays at Pachamama House in Hamilton East.
Eeks sound gorgeous on stage, in the streets, and around our campfires. We find ourselves singing in places where we’d not perhaps thought of going, and we feel privileged to support passionate people speaking about the most important things in the world. We love what we do and think you might too.
