3rd August ~ KENT DANIEL

3rd August KENT DANIEL   –  Singer..Guitarist….Accordion….Bazouki….and more!

Blessed with one of the most beautiful voices in Australian folk music, a rare taste in songs, and loads of talented musicians who want to play with him, one mystery remains!  Why is Kent Daniel so painfully modest?  so reluctant to blow his own trumpet?

It’s not that he is shy; in fact he has a wry sense of humour and banters easily with the audience, no matter where he is.  He is a well-loved favourite in the legendary ‘Barrington Tops Guest House’ where he has made music for over 18 years, alas until it burned down recently.  Moreover, he has played 28 years at the ‘Buttai Barn’  to audiences ranging from Corporate shindigs to weddings, all with unflappable good humour.

He is that rarest of birds – a full time musician, employed on his home territory, and, word is, he can also keep a weather–eye on where the best fish can be caught.

He plays folk-based music when he can, and has lead the Hunter based ‘Bushfire’ dance band since 1987.  Kent was deservedly part of the Musica Viva programme in schools for 11 years.  He has been well-received by Festivals, and has made many appearances on TV and radio.

We, in the Newcastle & HunterValley Folk Club have had to snatch him away from his other commitments, to play this evening with us, on 3rd August.  He is accompanied by Bill Wiseman on flute, whistle and strings, including a beautiful Irish Bouzouki.  Bill is a remarkable player in his own right, but together they are a stunningly apt complement, each to the other, in meltingly rich soundscape.

Support on the night is our very own ~Paul Regan~a favourite among folk circles in the Newcastle area.paul regan

Over the past 50-odd years he has appeared at festivals, folk clubs and other events while in his earlier years he was in a rock band in the UK.   He has an eclectic taste in music range from folk music to hard rock but he particularly loves acoustic blues from the “early days” and includes a stack of excellent comedy songs in his repertoire from a variety of sources.

Nowadays Paul does a lot of entertaining for older people at retirement homes and villages where songs by people such as Burl Ives, Pat Boone, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the Beatles are much requested.

Paul and wife Helena also run the popular monthly Lakeside Folk Circle at Teralba which is growing in strength since being started about four years ago.

No-one knows what songs Paul will peform when he’s on stage but it’s alway a good variety coupled with some neat finger style guitar playing on his lovely Martin guitar…
