A festive night to finish the Folk Club year!  Bring a plate of “festive food” to share, and enjoy the singing and fun.

This is also a Come All Ye night, so brush off your guitar, limber up your vocal cords, and take the stage to sing, play, recite or spin a yarn!  See the MC on the night or email folkclubcontacts@gmail.com to avoid disappointment.  Maximum of 10 minutes per performer.

The Newcastle People’s Chorus is a union choir with an emphasis on social justice and workers’ rights.  Its members combine these concerns with a love of singing.  New members are always welcome and they don’t have auditions!  If you think you might be interested, contact the Chorus, or just turn up to one of the Monday night rehearsals and introduce yourself.

The Chorus will celebrate its 35th birthday this year and has grown from a small group to a choir with considerable confidence.  In the past, the Chorus has toured Ireland, the UK and New Zealand.  The Chorus performs locally and at folk festivals and at other celebrations or causes, and has strong links with other union choirs around Australia, which leads to “combined choirs” performances roughly once a year.

Musically, the emphasis is on “a cappella” singing; that is, singing without backing instruments in three or four-part harmony.  The repertoire of the Chorus ranges from traditional union songs like “Solidarity Forever”, to songs in the Folk tradition such as “If I Were Free”, to modern songs like “Power in a Union”.  CDs will be available for purchase on the night.
